A CEREC crown is a permanent ceramic restoration that’s designed, milled, and fitted in a single appointment, typically in around 60 to 90 minutes.
Instead of taking a traditional mould of your tooth and sending it to an external laboratory, your dentist uses a digital 3D scanner to capture a precise image. The crown is then designed on screen and milled from a solid block of high-quality ceramic, right here in the practice. The result is a tooth-coloured, durable restoration that’s colour-matched to your natural teeth and bonded into place before you leave.
CEREC same-day crowns are suitable for many patients who need a crown, including those replacing an old or damaged crown, restoring a heavily filled or weakened tooth, or protecting a tooth after root canal treatment.
They’re a particularly good option if you have a busy schedule and want to avoid the inconvenience of a temporary crown and a second appointment. Your dentist will assess whether a CEREC crown is the most appropriate option for your specific case during your consultation.
In some situations—such as very complex restorations or cases involving multiple teeth—a lab-made crown may be recommended instead.
Your dentist examines the tooth and confirms a CEREC crown is the right approach. If the tooth needs any preparation, this is done under local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable throughout.
A small handheld scanner captures a detailed 3D image of your tooth and surrounding teeth. It takes seconds, it’s completely comfortable, and it replaces the traditional putty impressions most patients prefer to avoid.
Your dentist designs the crown on-screen using specialist software, adjusting its shape, contour, and bite to match your natural teeth precisely.
The design is sent to the CEREC milling unit in the practice. Your crown is carved from a solid block of high-quality ceramic in around 10 to 15 minutes.
Your dentist checks the fit, makes any fine adjustments, colour-matches the crown, and bonds it permanently into place. You leave with your finished restoration.
Everything happens in a single visit, typically 60 to 90 minutes. No need to take additional time off work or arrange a second trip to the practice.
With traditional crowns, you’d wear a temporary restoration for one to two weeks while the permanent crown is made in a lab. Temporaries can feel loose, sensitive, or uncomfortable. CEREC skips this stage entirely.
3D digital scanning captures your tooth with high accuracy, and the milling process is computer-guided. This typically results in a well-fitting restoration with minimal adjustment needed.
CEREC crowns are made from high-quality ceramic that’s colour-matched and translucent like natural enamel. Once bonded, they’re designed to blend with your surrounding teeth.
The ceramic used is strong and wear-resistant. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, CEREC crowns can be expected to last many years, comparable to traditional lab-made crowns.
A specific fee will be confirmed at your consultation, based on the complexity of your case and the tooth being treated.
We’re always transparent about pricing before any treatment begins. Your dentist will discuss the cost with you during your consultation, and you’ll receive a written treatment plan before proceeding.
We offer flexible payment plans to help spread the cost. Ask our team for details.
Typically, 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the restoration. Your dentist will provide a more specific time estimate during your consultation.
The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure. Some patients experience mild sensitivity afterwards, which usually settles within a few days.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, CEREC crowns can be expected to last many years. Longevity depends on individual factors, including your bite, oral hygiene habits, and general wear. Your dentist will advise on how to care for your crown.
Yes. The ceramic material used in CEREC crowns is strong and wear-resistant. Clinical research supports their use as a durable, long-term restoration comparable to traditional alternatives.
CEREC crowns are made from ceramic that mimics the translucency and colour of natural enamel. Your dentist colour-matches the crown to your surrounding teeth during the design stage.
Most teeth that need a crown can be treated with CEREC, but suitability depends on the location, condition, and amount of remaining tooth structure. Your dentist will confirm whether CEREC is the right option at your consultation.
Implant-supported crowns are typically made using a different process. If you need a crown on an implant, your dentist will discuss the best approach with you.
Care for a CEREC crown the same way you would a natural tooth: brush twice daily, clean between your teeth, and attend regular check-ups. Avoid biting very hard objects. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare advice.
Ceramic crowns can chip or fracture in rare cases, just as natural teeth can. If this happens, contact the practice, and we’ll assess the damage and discuss your options—which may include repair or replacement.
